HOLLYWOOD FILMMAKERS ADAM MCKAY, DAVID SIROTA, SCOTT STUBER, AND NETFLIX SUED FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT AND OTHER ILLEGALITIES CONCERNING THE MOVIE “DON’T LOOK UP” STARRING LEONARDO DICAPRIO, MERYL STREEP & JENNIFER LAWRENCE

Damages Sought In Excess of $1 Billion Dollars

(Orlando, Florida, December 5, 2024) Today, Larry Klayman, Esq., the founder of both Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch, a former federal prosecutor who was on the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division trial team that broke up the AT&T monopoly during the Reagan administration, and a former Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Florida, announced that he had filed the lawsuit on behalf of author and screenwriter Darren Hunter for alleged copyright infringement and other illegalities by Don’t Look Up screenwriters Adam McKay and David Sirota, Scott Huber, and Netflix. The Complaint styled, Hunter v. Netflix, et. al., Civil Action Filing No. 212276381 (9th Judicial Circuit Court, Orange County, Fla.) is embedded below and can also be viewed at www.larryklayman.com

The lawsuit alleges that the defendant screenwriters unlawfully copied and exploited original elements from the book The Million Day Forecast, which were then used as a basis for the wildly successful Netflix movie Don’t Look Up. The duplicity includes multiple plot points, characters, and themes from Darren Hunter’s book including young female astrophysics students both being offered a deal to remain out of prison if they stop warning people about the looming space objects, to both female presidents ultimately being attacked by an alien creature on an exoplanet.

In Hunter’s book and the movie, technological solutions for handling objects from space are developed at the CERN Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland. The Hunter book and the movie not coincidentally focus on a polarized society in the face of a looming disaster which is used as a metaphor for the impact of climate change and pollution.

Plaintiff Hunter and Defendant filmmaker David Sirota each attended William Penn Charter High School, a small private school in Philadelphia. In 2017, Hunter gave a talk about The Million Dollar Forecast at their high school library where he donated copies of the book to students.

Don’t Look Up is believed to have grossed over $1 Billion U.S. Dollars in box office receipts.

Klayman had this to say upon filing suit:

The deceit and greed of Netflix, Adam McKay, David Sirota, Scott Huber, Hyperobject Productions, Inc., is unfortunate testament to the current state of some in Hollywood. These Defendants will pay dearly for their theft and justice will prevail in favor of my client, Darren Hunter.
